A Guide to Your Child’s Development Milestones

Every child grows on their own timeline, but milestones can help you notice patterns and provide the language to describe your child’s development when talking with a therapist, teacher or healthcare professional. Some children develop skills earlier or later than others, and that’s okay. The goal isn’t to hit every skill at the same time, but to stay aware of how your child is growing across different areas and whether they’re making steady progress.

This Guide Covers Five Key Areas of Development:

Five-year-olds are busy learning how the world works. They begin thinking more logically, moving with better control and building stronger friendships. They also develop the ability to complete tasks from start to finish and take pride in doing things independently.

Language and Communication

Includes understanding and using words, sounds and gestures. Covers both receptive language (what they understand) and expressive language (what they say).

Cognitive

Involves learning, problem-solving and thinking. Includes recognizing patterns, solving puzzles, playing pretend and understanding early concepts like size or quantity.

Movement

Includes gross motor skills like sitting, walking and climbing, and fine motor skills like drawing, using utensils or stacking blocks.

Social and Emotional

Involves how your child interacts with others, shows feelings and builds relationships. Includes sharing, playing together and using words to express emotions.

Feeding and Self-Care

Covers nursing and independent eating. Also includes chewing, swallowing, and developing a taste for a variety of healthy foods. In year five, you’ll also see key self-care milestones added to this category.

Each milestone page includes examples of what your child might be doing at a certain age, along with simple activities to support their growth at home.
